Surf's Up is the 17th studio album by the American rock band the Beach Boys, released on August 30, 1971, by Brother Records and Capitol Records. As a monumental pivot point in the band's career, the album strips away their wholesome, sun-drenched California beach image to reveal a somber, deeply introspective, and progressive art-pop record. Managed and heavily influenced by Jack Rieley, the project intentionally re-introduced the band to the era's counterculture by directly tackling heavy political, ecological, and existential themes.
